Biosphere reserves offer the chance and also have the mission to prove new perspectives  for regional development. Humans and their environment are hereby in the focus. The social-scientific researches from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in the biosphere reserve Bliesgau shall determine information to the demographic structure, lifestyles, perception of environment and behavior in the environment. In a survey at the time of establishing the biosphere reserve Bliesgau a review of the living conditions and habits shall be carried out. Focal point is the environmental awareness and the behavior in relation to social class and lifestyle. This is supposed to analyze and document the status quo at the time of establishing the biosphere reserve. Another goal is to figure out differences and similarities between urban, suburban and rural areas as well as the biosphere reserve Bliesgau with according regions for comparison in the rest of Saarland. Indicators are chosen, that shall measure the social changes over a period of time (at least ten years). Follow-up interviews are part of the research proposal for the UNESCO. This is the basis for future monitoring.
